Although the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the majority of the businesses across the globe, Canada’s Television and Film sector has witnessed a boom. Since the reopening of the industry last year, Canada has been welcoming people working in this sector.

Every single individual from the industry has contributed largely to ensure maximum safety throughout the pandemic period. Joint efforts of the producers and unions have led to the flourish of the TV and film sector amidst the pandemic. People have been working responsibly and followed all health and safety protocols. That helped in keeping the numbers of affected extremely low in the sets.

The Directors Guild of Canada has said in Ontario alone, as many as 87 major productions are currently running. Famous TV series such as Locke and Key and Star Trek currently under production and are excited for their launch. Though there are so many projects in Ontario, survey reports of the crew from last year indicates an affected rate of more than 0.1%. Only 34 cases were detected by the Toronto Public Health from the 15 productions they tested since fall. Not only this shows how responsible the crew has been but also shows their commitment towards assuring the industry is operational.

How are the crew staying safe?

The film sets in operation always followed the health and safety protocols the government made for workplaces. To make it suitable for all, the producers and unions customized these protocols for the TV and film industry as a whole.

For regular testing, daily health screening has been the norm as explained by Aren Prupas, Muse entertainment’s chief operating officer.

Each and every member has been following the guidelines to guarantee the safety of the entire crew. At the time of performance when the actors open their mask, everyone else has to wear a mask and face shield.

How are the productions benefitting?

Likewise, the popular locations like Toronto and Vancouver, the less popular provinces like Alberta, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Manitoba are also witnessing a flourish.

Alberta, the western Canadian province has taken off funding caps and enhanced tax credits. With the help of this, the larger budget productions are being able to work in this province.
To help with the funding, the Ministry of Canadian Heritage announced an increase in coverage. The decision was made in May 2021 and has helped create total funding of up to $149 million Canadian.

A Short-Term Compensation Fund (STCF) has been announced by the federal government. This is helping the productions with COVID-19 related shutdowns.

What is the work permits options for workers of the Film and Television production?

In order to work in Canada, you need to learn how to obtain the rights. Canada has always welcomed workers from foreign countries to work in their film and television industry.
People who are coming in to work in this industry are exempted from the Labour Market Impact Assessment(LMIA) requirement. This has great value because according to the document no Canadian citizen or resident is available to work on the same.

Moreover, workers can come in as business visitors. Who are eligible to enter the country as business visitors? Well, if you are a film producer working on a foreign-financed production or an essential person coming for a short time. Also, performing artists like actors and dancers are also eligible to enter the country as business visitor.

Apart from these, all other workers in the industry will have to have a work permit to work in Canada.

While some are totally exempted from the LMIA requirements, some workers will have to obtain the document as part of the work permit.

If you are an essential worker to the production and eligible through the Television and Film Production Workers category, you are exempted from the LMIA requirement.

On the other hand, if you are coming in because there is no permanent resident or citizen available to do the work, you will need the LMIA document. The process is conducted by advertising the position in Canada. In some cases, however, many workers in the TV and film industry are granted entry without advertising their position in the country.
